ls - list files
     ex: prompt> ls        : all files in this directory
     ex: prompt> ls -l     : all files, shows size, date, permissions
     ex: prompt> ls -al    : all files including hidden files
     ex: prompt> ls *.tex  : all files ending with extension 'tex'

cd - change directory
     ex: prompt> cd                   : change to home directory
     ex: prompt> cd /usr/src/kernels  : change to kernels directory
     ex: prompt> cd lectures          : change to directory lectures

mkdir - make a directory
     ex: prompt> mkdir fallow         : make subdirectory 'fallow'

pwd - print working directory
     ex: prompt> pwd                  : shows current directory

cp - copy file(s) to another location
     ex: prompt> cp * ~/Courses/c4029 : copy all files to 'c4029'
     ex: prompt> cp -i * ~            : interactive copy files to home directory

mv - move file(s) to another location
     ex: prompt> mv * ~/Courses/c4029 : move all files to 'c4029'
     ex: prompt> mv -i * ~            : interactive move files to home directory

rm - remove a file
     ex: prompt> rm *        : remove all files in current directory
     ex: prompt> rm -i *     : interactive remove all files in current directory
     ex: prompt> rm -i hello : interactive remove file hello from .

df - see hard disk usage
     ex: prompt> df       : Filesystem, 1K blocks, used, available, mount
     ex: prompt> df -T    : Filesystem, type, 1K blocks, used, available, mount

more/less - scroll through a file - search
     ex: prompt> more file.txt

man - show a man page
     ex: prompt> man ls

sudo - switch to another user
     ex: prompt> sudo su   : switch to superuser, password required

bzip2 - compress/decompress file(s)
     ex: prompt> bzip2 -d linux-3.5.3.tar.bz2  : decompress linux kernel source

tar - archive/unarchive a collection of files
     ex: prompt> tar xf linux-3.5.3.tar   : unarchive linux kernel source file

gedit - edit a file
     ex: prompt> gedit file.txt

xterm/gnome-terminal - open a shell
     ex: prompt> xterm -fn 10x20 -geometry 80x24+100+200

tail - writes the last 10 lines of a file
     ex: prompt> tail -f file.log

grep - search through subdirectories for a file containing a given string
     ex: prompt> grep -ir hello *   : case insensitive
     ex: prompt> grep -i hello *    : case insensitive, only current directory

make - compile/install code - there should be a Makefile
